LATIN NAME: Valeriana officinalis and Valeriana wallichii
SOURCE: Cold exraction
COLOUR: yellow-amber.
ORIGIN: Bulgaria
AROMA: pungent, earthy, musky, sweet, spicy and warm.
QUALITIES: New Valerian officinalis absolute. Organically grown in Bulgaria, this rare absolute contains >7% Valerenic acid, which is one of the active compounds in Valerian root believed responsible for its therapeutic effects (sedative & anxiolytic) I have highlighted these compounds on the GC-MS.
Over the years it's become very difficult to source true V. officinalis essential oil and valerenic acid is often missing from most samples along with much of the other important compounds. From a therapeutic point of view alone, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to stock this true absolute!
Valeriana officinalis root is chemically complex. The cold extraction used to make this absolute ensures that the finer aromatic compounds and larger molecules are retained. This is because the high temperature required of steam distillation can destroy some of the delicate aromatic compounds and the larger, heavier molecules cannot pass through steam distillation. Thus the result is a highly concentrated product yielding a closer representiation of the original plant material.
Also blends well with Sandalwood, Vetivert, Spikenard, Patchouli, Lavender, Pine, Cedarwood, Mandarin and Petitgrain.
A member of the Valerianaceae family, an erect perennial up to one and a half metres high with dark green leaves and white to deep pink red flowers. It has thick, greyish rhizomes which often show above the ground. Native to Europe and parts of Asia.
